Concern in Uruguay about law on custody of children

Montevideo, July 25 (Prensa Latina) Director of Uruguayan organization El Paso, Andrea Tuana, reiterated on Sunday that government projects of shared custody of children in case of separation of mother and father put children at risk.

An activist for human rights of women, children and adolescents, Tuana expressed concern about the suppression from current Code of the intervention of a Family court judge in the best interests of the minor when the two parties fail to come to an agreement.

Proposals coming from ruling right-wing parties Nacional and Colorado establish that parents be forced to share the same time with their children.

However, organizations aligned to El Paso point out that ‘subjecting the child to having to live with parties accused of aggression can cause incalculable damage’.

In Tuana’s perception, family members of the aggressor probably support him/her, therefore, they can put pressure on the child, manipulate him, threaten or make him feel guilty, which is terrible, she considered.

The social leader commented that opposing organizations jointly presented their points of view in a senatorial commission and legislators promoting the new bill showed no interest in producing an exchange of criteria.
