U.S. continues aggressive escalation against Cuba with new sanctions

Washington, Jul 23 (Prensa Latina) The Joe Biden administration has issued new sanctions on Thursday against Cuba´s Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) and the Special Forces Unit (BEN) of the Ministry of Interior (MININT).

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Treasury Department issued measures against Army Corps Gen. Álvaro López Miera and BEN for alleged abuses in Jul. 11 insurrections.

Both López Miera and BEN were included on OFAC´s list of so-called Specially Designated Nationals (SDN).

According to OFAC, the Cuban authorities repressed ‘peaceful demonstrations,’ even though some videos circulating on social media show vandalism and attacks on law enforcement officials and state properties.

In addition, OFAC blames MINFAR and MININT for alleged disappearance of a hundred Cuban people after Jul. 11 riots, but senior Cuban officials publicly denied that claim and did confirm the existence of detainees for violating current laws.

In practice, Thursday’s decision, adopted under Global Magnitsky Act, bans people subject to US jurisdiction from negotiating with detainees, as well as making any contribution or provision of goods or services.

OFAC itself recognizes on its official website that with these new sanctions all Cubans are blocked, regardless of whether they are included on the SDN list.

Cuba denounced Washington for supporting a campaign promoting from social media to destabilize Cuba while the economic, commercial and financial blockade continues, now tightened with 243 measures adopted by former president Donald Trump.
