Two dams collapse in northern China after heavy downpours

Beijing, Jul 19 (Prensa Latina) China on Monday confirmed the collapse of two dams in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia (north) as a result of torrential downpours in most of the country in recent days.

The Ministry of Emergency Management pointed out that there were no casualties and the residents of communities near these infrastructures, located at the spillways of the Yong’an and Xinfa reservoirs, were evacuated immediately.

According to the Ministry, the heavy rains caused the continuous rise in the water level of the Nuomin river, which caused the collapse.

The incident affected 16,660 people, flooded 21,708 hectares of crops, destroyed 22 bridges and 15.6 kilometers of roads.

Rescue teams are still in the area to proceed with contingency work in case of further disasters.

China is experiencing another challenging rainfall season and remains on the alert in most of its territory due to the persistence of bad weather conditions, including the arrival of typhoons in the south.

Torrential downpours this weekend forced Beijing, the capital, to cancel hundreds of flights, bus and rail routes, as well as to close numerous outdoor tourist sites.
