The foreign minister’s stance was expressed addressing the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) that is held virtually in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.

Terrorism remains the most serious challenge the NAM must face as this scourge is one of the major threats to international peace and security, add to it the economic terrorism that seeks to suffocate the peoples and undermine their sovereign policies, the head of Syrian diplomacy said.

Another challenge is represented by the external aggressions, which, according to Al-Mekdad, were perpetrated in recent years by manipulating the provisions of the United Nations Charter and promoting distorted interpretations of some of its articles to justify acts of aggression, he explained.

The diplomat denounced that the illegal coercive measures imposed by Washington and the European Union to the Syrian people caused them great suffering and had catastrophic effects in aspects of their daily life, in addition to limiting the state institutions’ capacity to provide services and guarantee the basic needs of the population.
