MAIS denounces crisis after heavy rains in Colombian department

Bogota, Jul 14 (Prensa Latina) President of the Alternative Indigenous and Social Movement (MAIS), Martha Peralta, on Wednesday denounced the critical situation in the Colombian department of Arauca after recent rains in the area.

‘There is a serious crisis in Arauca today. I call on the national government and the country to take action. More than 10 days without power. Economic crisis. Floods affecting 300,000 people,’ the indigenous leader said.

She added that a makeshift bridge built by the community was washed away by the waters, and urged the administration of Ivan Duque to listen to the claims and send the necessary aid for this crisis

Cut off, disconnected from neighboring departments, no water, power or Internet, intensive care units at one hundred percent, the department survives with the little things that the community can do, MAIS president denounced.

The indigenous leader and Wayuu lawyer pointed out that the 52nd massacre took place amid this scenario.

According to the Institute for Development and Peace Studies (INDEPAZ), in the area known as Piedras de Moler (Grindstones area), several people were shot in public.

A six-year-old child and two adults were killed in the massacre, and the child’s mother, uncle and two other people were injured in it, according to INDEPAZ.
