During the meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Garmendía thanked Moscow for the various demonstrations of support for Cuba, particularly the recent statements by the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, María Zajárova, diplomatic sources from the Antillean nation revealed.
He stressed that the disorders and incidents that occurred in some Cuban towns on July 11 were the result of a plan designed by the United States Government to opportunistically exert the greatest possible pressure against Havana.
He stressed that this occurs at a time when the country faces a complex situation, derived from 16 months of confrontation with the Covid-19 pandemic and the current outbreak, in addition to the severe resurgence of the US blockade and the brutal restrictions it imposes on the Cuban people. .
The representative of the Caribbean island said that the plan that caused the incidents last Sunday failed, the Cuban authorities have full control of the situation and the normal functioning of the institutions is maintained under the conditions imposed by the health emergency.
During the meeting, Riabkov expressed Russia’s solidarity with the Cuban government and people, as well as his support for a speedy return to normalcy.
Both diplomats also addressed other current issues in bilateral relations.
On the Russian side, the vice chancellor, the director of the Latin American Department of the Foreign Ministry, Alexander Schetinin, among other officials from that department, accompanied. While the Cuban ambassador was accompanied by the counselor Marcos Félix Lazo.
