Cuba reports 6,422 Covid-19 cases and 28 deaths

Havana, Jul 9 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) on Friday reported 6,422 new Covid-19 and 28 deaths over the past 24 hours, the highest figures since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country last year.

‘This is the worst day in our country,’ the national director of Epidemiology at MINSAP, Dr. Francisco Duran, said during his daily briefing on television.

Cuba has accumulated 224,789 Covid-19 cases and 1,459 deaths since March 11, 2020.

As part of Cuba’s fight against Covid-19, the country’s regulatory authorities approved the emergency use of the Abdala vaccine candidate throughout the country, representatives of BioCubaFarma said on Twitter.

Abdala, which was developed by the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB), has shown 92.28 percent of efficacy in its three-dose scheme during Phase III of clinical trials, an indicator that exceeds those demanded by the World Health Organization (50 percent) to be declared a vaccine against Covid-19.
