‘I have the honor to thank you for your firm commitment and alliance,’ WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told Luis Arce in a letter released by the Bolivian Information Agency.
The letter especially recognized Luis Arce’s stance as he made ‘an urgent call for equitable access to vaccines to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, during the recently concluded World Health Assembly.’
Ghebreyesus called for help to ‘speed up the momentum and to vaccinate at least 10% of the population of each country by September, in order to meet our goal of vaccinating at least 30% by the end of the year.’
WHO also praised the Latin American and Caribbean role in the face of the pandemic and the massive commitment to guarantee equity and chance to access to vaccines, therapies and diagnoses in the face of Covid-19.
‘The countries responded to the call for equitable access through Covax mechanism and pledged to share over 515 million vaccine doses,’ WHO Director-General added.
Arce, on the other hand, released a text encouraging Ghebreyesus and WHO ‘to go on working for fair access to vaccines to control the pandemic, save lives and speed up global economic recovery.’
