Speaking to the press after concluding the 16th international meeting on Syria in the Astana format, Lavrentiev warned that the terrorists cannot be considered moderate opposition.
‘The fight against terrorist groups must continue until their final and complete destruction. There should be no relaxation in this direction,’ he said, according to the TASS news agency.
He pointed out that a ceasefire could limit efforts in the fight against terrorism and emphasized that the fight must continue despite calls by some European countries for a national truce.
Lavrentiev indicated that the truce should be the objective, but ‘for the moment it may limit the actions of government forces and international efforts in the fight against terrorist organizations with still quite great potential, the Sputnik news agency reported.
For the Russian envoy to Damascus, prospects are seen for a gradual increase of trust between the Syrian government and the opposition.
‘We have had very interesting talks with both the Syrian opposition and the government. We see that there are certain prospects for gradually increasing the level of trust,’ he said.
The next negotiations on Syria in the Astana format will be held before the end of the year in the Kazakh capital, a joint statement by Russia, Iran and Turkey highlighted, at the conclusion of the 16th International Meeting on Syria in this format.
Representatives of the United Nations, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq attended as observers.
At the meeting, the negotiators examined the situation in the Arab country, international humanitarian assistance, the prospects of reopening the Constitutional Committee for Syria in Geneva.
They also discussed possible measures to build trust between the parts, including the exchange of prisoners, the release of hostages and the search for missing persons.

En declaraciones a la prensa luego de concluir la reunión internacional 16 sobre Siria en el formato de Astaná, Lavrentiev advirtió que los terroristas no pueden ser considerados oposición moderada.
‘La lucha contra los grupos terroristas debe continuar hasta su destrucción definitiva y completa. No debería haber relajación en esta dirección’, señaló, según la agencia de noticias TASS.
Apuntó que un alto el fuego podría limitar los esfuerzos en la lucha contra el terrorismo y subrayó que el combate debe continuar pese a los llamados de algunos países europeos a una tregua a nivel nacional.
Lavrentiev indicó que la tregua debe ser el objetivo, pero ‘por el momento puede limitar las acciones de las fuerzas gubernamentales y los esfuerzos internacionales en la lucha contra las organizaciones terroristas con un potencial todavía bastante grande, reportó la agencia de noticias Sputnik.
Para el enviado ruso ante Damasco, se ven perspectivas de un aumento gradual de la confianza entre el Gobierno sirio y la oposición.
‘Hemos tenido conversaciones muy interesantes tanto con la oposición siria como con el Gobierno. Vemos que hay ciertas perspectivas para aumentar gradualmente el nivel de confianza’, indicó.
Las próximas negociaciones sobre Siria en el formato de Astaná se realizarán antes de concluir el año en la capital kazaja, destacó una declaración conjunta de Rusia, Irán y Turquía, al concluir la decimosexta Reunión Internacional sobre Siria en este formato.
En calidad de observadores asistieron representantes de la Organización de Naciones Unidas, Jordania, Líbano e Iraq.
En el encuentro los negociadores examinaron la situación en el país árabe, la asistencia humanitaria internacional, las perspectivas de reabrir el Comité Constitucional para Siria en Ginebra.
También analizaron posibles medidas que permitan fomentar la confianza entre las partes, incluidas el intercambio de prisioneros, la liberación de rehenes y la búsqueda de personas desaparecidas.
