The visiting leader later met with the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who was accompanied by the Secretary for Relations with States, Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher.
According to the press release, during the cordial talks, Pope Francis’ historic visit to Iraq was recalled, as well as the moments of unity experienced by the Iraqis. The importance of promoting the culture of national dialogue to favor stability and the process of reconstruction of the country was emphasized.
The parties stressed the importance of protecting the historic presence of Christians in the country with appropriate legal measures, and the significant contribution they can make to the common good, and highlighted the need to guarantee them the same rights and duties as other citizens, the communiqué stressed.
Finally, they paid attention to the regional situation, noting the efforts made by Iraq, with the support of the international community, to restore a climate of trust and peaceful coexistence.
