On his Twitter message for the date, the UN chief noted that as a former member of the Portuguese Assembly, he is ‘well aware of the responsibility of parliamentarians to promote the aspirations of the people they represent.’
This year’s event will be marked by a series of events focused on youth empowerment, following the recent launch of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) campaign ‘I Say Yes to Youth in Parliament!’
The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated since 2019 every year on June 30, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded.
At present, the IPU, as a world organization of parliaments, connects national parliaments in order to promote greater transparency, accountability and participation at the global level.
