11 people confirmed dead in Miami Condo collapse

Washington, Jun 29 (Prensa Latina) Five days after the Miami-Dade condo collapse, the death toll rose to 11, while rescuers sifted through the debris in desperate hope of finding 150 people remain unaccounted.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava confirmed Monday at a press conference responders pulled two bodies from the site.

Mayor Levine Cava said that rescuers continue their search and rescue operation by using all available resources, federal, state and local aid, and rescue teams from other countries.

For reasons not yet determined, the Champlain Towers northeast, opened in 1981 and with a total of 136 flats, collapsed in seconds at dawn on Thursday, June 24, when tenants were sleeping.

Local media said that an October 2018 report following the inspection by the engineering firm Morabito Consultants had warned of major structural problems at the Surfside high-rise, but a month later a town building official told board members the structure was in ‘very good shape,’ according to minutes of that meeting released Monday.

On the other hand, the White House announced Monday that President Joe Biden has no plans at this time to visit the site.

According to President’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki, such a trip would divert attention and resources from search and rescue operations, although she assured the government will keep full support for actions and a thorough probe into what really happened.
