Syrian Foreign Ministry blamed Turkey for water war

Damascus, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday deplored what it called the water war the Turkish Government has unleashed in the country's northeast region by depriving hundreds of thousands of inhabitants of water.

Almost a million people in the city of Hasakeh and the surrounding communities are without water because Turkish military forces and associated extremists stopped the operation of the A’llouk water plant, located in the town of Ras al-Ain, for 25th time, the Foreign Ministry denounced in a communique.

Ankara reduced the flow of water from the Euphrates River and the amount of the liquid reaching Syria is below to what is stipulated in the agreement signed between the two countries and deposited with the United Nations Secretariat General, the Ministry added.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that this issue has been analyzed in several international fora, however, Ankara refused to listen to the voice of reason and the diplomatic wisdom, and persists, according to Damascus’ complaints, in its myopic policy that seriously damages good neighborly relations.

The agreement signed in 1987 stipulates that Ankara will release at least 500 cubic meters of water per second, 58 percent of which Syria leaves for Iraq in virtue of a bilateral agreement signed in 1989 between Damascus and Baghdad.
