According to Deputy Nicolás Mesa, one of the spokespersons for Frente Amplio, this was decided after phone recordings of conversations between Cardoso and Pereira were made public.
The opposition political force considered that there are ethical elements for the minister to renounce from his position, since he requested personal favors via phone, and on the contrary he received the public support from President Luis Lacalle Pou.
Cardoso will make statements at the Special Committee on Security and Coexistence, which is the adequate space to give the necessary answers and explain the context in which those calls took place.
