Finnish PM favors resuming EU-Russia summit’s initiative

Brussels, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin on Friday considered possible a new analysis of the initiative proposed by Germany and France for a summit of the 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) and Russia.

I consider that it is very likely a return to a further discussion about the aforementioned meeting at the highest level, Marin said at the beginning of the second day of the EU leaders’ meeting in Brussels.

On Thursday, EU statesmen discussed for several hours the French-German proposal to renew the talks with Russia at a high-level meeting.

However, facing the opposition from several countries, including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, the initiative lacked the necessary unanimous support, Brussels television highlighted.

The final decision was to entrust EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell to prepare for dialogue with Russia to separately analyze issues of interest for the bloc.

The EU summit, which will conclude on Friday, should have determined its common position about its relations with Russia and Turkey, migration, climate change, energy security and the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
