Cuba brings in first electric tractors in agriculture

Havana, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Since early June, Cuban agriculture has brought in the first electric tractors that will help to reduce fuel consumption, a deficit resource due to the blockade imposed by Washington, the Agriculture Ministry (MINAG) reported.

These electric tractors that make use of photovoltaic solar energy were brought in through Camilo Cienfuegos Electronic Industry Company, a leading company in renewable energy sources. The tractors will be validated by the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, an institution in charge of certifying technologies used for agriculture.

The 25G-model tractors -manufactured in India under Farmtrac brand-, arrived in Cuba thanks to India-Spain joint collaboration.

As reported by MINAG, these electric tractors have a lithium ion accumulator with a nominal power of 21.6 kilowatts (kW) hour, allowing them to reach up to 18.5 kW, similar to a 25-hp tractor.

Therefore, MINAG added, these tractors show technical conditions for their introduction in Cuba and allow the country´s agricultural activity in the future, without the current high dependence on fossil fuels for agricultural development.
