The summit’s theme is: ‘Forty Years Building Peace and Security, and Promoting Development and Resilience in the Face of Global Challenges.’
The meeting begins with tributes to former Presidents Kenneth Kaunda, from Zambia, and Sam Nujoma, from Namibia.
However, according to a presidential communique released in Pretoria, the central purpose of the Summit is to assess the SADC regional response and support to the Republic of Mozambique to address acts of violent extremism in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique.
This meeting of Southern African leaders follows up the SADC Extraordinary Double Troika Summit held in Mozambique on May 27, 2021.
President Ramaphosa is accompanied by Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor and Minister of State Security Ayanda Dlodlo.
