UN chief appointment tops General Assembly

United Nations, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) The UN General Assembly will address this Friday the draft resolution about the appointment for the next secretary-general, a position in which the current head of the multilateral organization, Antonio Guterres, is seeking a second term.

On June 8, the Security Council adopted by acclamation resolution 2580, this document recommends to the Assembly that Guterres be appointed for a second term of office from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2026.

Guterres expressed early 2021 his willingness to serve a second five-year term, ‘if that would be the will of the Member States.’

The Portuguese diplomat took office in January 2017 to succeed Ban Ki-moon after a hotly contested and transparent race in October 2016 that initially included 13 candidates.

In his years as a secretary-general, Guterres has had to face what he considers the greatest UN challenge since its founding 75 years ago: the Covid-19 pandemic.
