‘A day of emotional memory to Generalissimo Maximo Gomez, who died on June 17, 1905, with the grateful embrace of the Cuban people, to whom he gave his life as a military chief, until his last breath,’ the president wrote on Twitter.
Gomez died in Havana without a personal fortune in Havana at the age of 69.
With a delicate health, he worked hard as a member of the Liberal Party in that region.
Gomez joined the Cuban army on October 14, 1868, four days after the first uprising of the so-called Ten Years War, commanded by Carlos Manuel de Cespedes.
His incessant battle along with the Cubans promoted him to general-in-chief, the highest rank in the liberating forces.
