Mortality rate in Syrian men doubled due to war

Damascus, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) The head of Forensic Medicine in Syria, Hussein Nofal, on Monday revealed that the mortality rate of men in this country doubled compared to that in women.

A practical study conducted at the Mouwasat teaching hospital in the capital confirmed this reality and attributed it to the fact that the war has claimed the lives of more men than women, Nofal told al-Watan daily.

He revealed that a study on average life expectancy in Syria and mortality rates and their causes is being prepared, which will start in Damascus and be extended to other governorates.

He explained that there have been no clear studies on this issue since the beginning of the war in 2011 to date, and that such an action needs about a month and a half to be completed scientifically and correctly.

It would be the first study on the subject of life expectancy and mortality rates since 2010, the physician said.

He pointed out that the average age in Syria before the war was between 65 and 68 years old, but it decreased without specifying the percentage due to the lack of studies on the subject.

All the studies on this subject are not based on medical and scientific statistics, so they are not taken into account and cannot be trusted and be accepted by any scientific organization, he concluded.

The war in Syria has killed hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians, in addition to destroying the country’s service infrastructure, which seriously affected citizens’ quality of life.
