In the past two months, the Health Ministry reported several rises in daily cases, and according to the most recent report from this institution, at least 16,561 people have been infected, 355 of whom died and 12,563 recovered.
Doctor William Pape, a member of the Scientific Council from the World Health Organization, indicated that the new variants detected in Haiti, from Brazil and the United Kingdom, have to do with the rise in cases due to its higher level of infectivity and virulence.
The new rise in cases in Haiti comes at a time when its main hospitals are on the brink of collapse, and some health centers have already refused admitting new patients due to the lack of beds.
The health system is also undergoing a crisis over insufficient supply of oxygen to treat active patients, whereas the risk perception is still low among citizens, who refuse to wear face masks or respect social distancing.
