Tebune, who came to power after the resignation in April 2019 of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, in February announced the dissolution of Parliament and the call for elections, after approving in referendum a revision of the Constitution.
These are the first legislative elections since Bouteflika’s resignation and some 24 million Algerians have been called to elect the 407 deputies of the National People’s Assembly for a five-year term.
Voters will have to choose among more than 13,000 aspirants, more than half of them running as independent candidates, the first time that such a large number have assumed that electoral definition to face party-backed contenders.
According to analysts, the 407 parliamentarians elected in this consultation – whose first preliminary results could be released tomorrow – will face an arduous task to try to strengthen the Algerian economy, damaged by the Covid-19 pandemic and the fall in oil prices, among other priorities.
