Experts deny rumor of possible tsunami in Guantanamo, Cuba

Havana, Jun 10 (Prensa Latina) A fake rumor about the possibility of a tsunami affecting the eastern province of Guantanamo was denied on Thursday by Cuba's Institute of Meteorology.

‘It is totally FALSE the rumor about a possible tsunami that will affect Guantanamo. Disclose so quickly to avoid chaos and panic,’ experts clarify on a message from the scientific institution on Twitter.

The National Center for Seismological Research assures that the phenomenon could only occur in the event of a large magnitude earthquake in the sea.

This would have a vertical movement in the blocks in the fault, to produce the known piston effect, which is able to lift a mass of water and form large waves.

The agency recalls that strong earthquakes were registered in the south of Cuba, but they only caused slight disturbances to the sea.

According to the site of the aforementioned institution, the last perceptible event in Cuba occurred on April 21 at 02:23 (local time).
