The group issued a statement reacting to a new maneuver promoted by right-wing EU deputies in order to accuse Cuba of violating human rights, which was debated on Tuesday and will be voted on on Thursday.
The solidarity group considers regrettable the fact that the Plenum of the European Parliament hold this pointless debate, spearheaded by representatives of Spain’s right and far-right from Partido Popular, Ciudadanos and Vox, with the sole purpose of torpedoing the Agreement on Political Dialogue and Cooperation between the EU and Cuba.
The fact that the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, did not pronounce himself two days at the forum ago on the lifting of the blockade, removing Cuba from the list of States Promoters of Terrorism and the suspension of Titles III and IV of the Helms-Burton Act, was also questioned by the group.
The U.S. blockade has been repudiated 28 times in the past at the UN General Assembly, and the draft of a resolution on the need to end it is slated to be analyzed on June 23rd.
As for the anti-Cuban crusade at the Eurochamber, the friendship group underlined Cuba’s solidarity in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic by sending thousands of medical personnel to some 40 countries hit by the health crisis.
The Group also criticized the obsessive and constant talks on alleged human rights violations by the Cuban government, ignoring that the topic is a subject of discussion and formal dialogue as part of an agreement between Brussels and Havana.
