With 30.39 percent of 1,889 polling stations, Figueres was the first with 43,843 votes (36.38 percent), well ahead of his rival, Rolando Araya, with 31,29 votes (26.17 percent), an advantage that is considered definite; therefore, he will be the PLN candidate to the presidency.
During the PLN National Convention on Sunday, it is estimated that more than 370,000 Costa Rican citizens voted.
In his speech after the victory, in a criticism of the Government of the ruling Citizen Action Party, the candidate noted, ‘We are experiencing the biggest social and economic debacle in the last 40 years. One and a half million Costa Ricans live in poverty, almost a million are working in informality, more than 400,000 are unemployed and thousands are from closed companies.’
