Covid-19 crisis to push global unemployment over 200 million in 2022

Geneva, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) The economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is expected to contribute over 200 million people to global unemployment next year, with women and youths among the worst-hit people, the International Labor Organization (ILO) reported recently.

ILO presented the World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2021, which estimates that the world’s unemployed people equivalent to 5.7 percent of the unemployment rate) will stand at 205 million in 2022, above 187 million in 2019.

According to ILO, the shortfall in employment and working hours comes on top of persistently high pre-crisis levels of unemployment, underemployment and poor working conditions.

Compared to 2019, an additional 108 million workers worldwide are now categorized as poor or extremely poor, meaning that they and their families live on the equivalent of less than 3.20 dollars per person per day.

According to the report, ‘Five years of progress towards the eradication of working poverty have been undone, as working poverty rates have now reverted to those of 2015.’
