Opposition members in the bicameral Congress published a note in which they condemned the recent opening of an investigation by the Attorney General against Senators María José Pizarro, Alexander López and Wilson Arias, as well as disciplinary complaints against Chamber Members Angela María Robledo and Inti Asprilla.
The above-mentioned legislators backed up protesters in their demands to Ivan Duque’s government and reported violation of human rights during mass demonstrations in Colombia since April 28.
´We see with concern the inappropriate use of Colombia´s law enforcement by some people, they stated in their message.
‘Such people, through defamatory, slanderous and malicious actions, try to undermine our work as civil servants in defense of the rights and protection of life and integrity of the citizenship threatened by the excessive use of force,’ they warned.
According to the congress people, the Attorney General’s office is paving the way to silence the opposition.
In thatregard, the legislators under investigation would be deprived of the right to vote a bill that would extend Attorney General Margarita Cabello´s powers.
They argue on that Cabello must be declared not reliable to conduct complaints and investigations against opposition members due to her undeniable closeness to the national government as minister for justice and attorney general.
