Illinois House of Representatives urges to end US blockade on Cuba

Washington, Jun 1 (Prensa Latina) The Illinois House of Representatives approved a resolution calling Congress to eliminate the US economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, which has been in force for six decades.

The document is the 33rd adopted by a local or State authority in the US territory in the interest of improving bilateral relations, Havana’s ambassador to Washington, Lianys Torres, tweeted on Tuesday.

Resolution HR-0254 of the Illinois General Assembly refers that the economic blockade constitutes a violation of the rights of citizens of the US since travel restrictions prevent Americans from knowing for themselves Cuba’s real situation.

The legislators consider that the total reestablishment of trade and travel would be beneficial for both, particularly in the areas of food production, education, health, tourism, arts, music, sports and biotechnology.

Likewise, they urge President Joe Biden to renew the commitment with Cuba, initiated by the Obama administration (2009-2017), and to reestablish diplomatic and consular work in the capitals of the two countries.

On Monday, US Democratic Representative Bobby L. Rush presented to Congress the bill HR-3625, aimed at eliminating the blockade, as well as other sanctions against Cuba.

US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other members of the administration have reiterated that Cuba is not a priority issue for the government, and after almost five months in power, the 243 punitive measures imposed by the previous head of the White House remain intact.
