In April 2020, the United Nations gathered together a group of health experts who informed the world of the relation between smoking and Covid-19.
Covid-19 is an infectious disease that attacks mainly the lungs which are harmed by smoking. By damaging this organ’ functions, makes it so hard for the body to fight it, the statement reads.
Danger increases with global toll of tobacco-related deaths each year. Over eight million people are victims of such an addiction, even though the Covid-19 pandemic has triggered a willingness in many smokers stop puffing, said WHO´s report.
According to WHO, as many as 780 million smokers are considering quitting smoking in the current circumstances, but it happens that only 30% of them have access to mechanisms to succeed.
Since December 2020, WHO has launched a campaign for this World No Tobacco Day 2021 under slogan ¨Commit to Quit during Covid-19.¨
