Presumed hunger striker in Cuba granted medical discharge

Havana, May 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban citizen Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara was discharged today from the General Calixto García Hospital in this capital, where he was admitted on May 2 with a diagnosis of voluntary starvation.

According to a note published by the Provincial Directorate of Health of Havana, during his hospital stay, his evolution was favorable and currently his clinical and laboratory parameters are within normal ranges.

He added the statement that for days he had been on a free diet, in accordance with his nutritional needs, which allowed him to gain weight and regain all energy requirements.

Otero Alcántara received multidisciplinary medical care provided by the institution’s staff, whom he thanked during the entire period of stay. The professionals respected at all times the will of the patient, both for medical procedures, care, nutrition and length of stay in the hospital, said the note, after adding that all this is supported by the signature of the citizen in his clinical history .

Otero Alcántara arrived at the facility on May 2 in a medical transport, in a conscious state and walking without difficulty, and the physical examination carried out at that time did not reveal signs of malnutrition consistent with the alleged hunger strike, a note from the Health Directorate.

The statement explained that the clinical and biochemical parameters were normal, but due to the reasons why he went to the hospital, medical actions and follow-up and observation by specialists were indicated.
