Only through talks that put an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestine and to create a viable two-state solution could end costly, senseless cycles of violence, Wennesland said at the UN Security Council (UNSC).
Wennesland detailed on recent hostilities in the Gaza Strip and assured the ceasefire (agreed a few days ago) is still held.
The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Director Philippe Lazzarini also stressed the significance of a political solution that brings peace to Gaza.
Lazzarini, who recently visited the Gaza Strip, referred to UNRWA´s work to open its schools to shelter thousands of Palestinians displaced by violence escalation.
He also appealed for US$95 million launched this morning by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the Occupied Palestinian Territory Lynn Hastings.
As stated by Hastings, this figure will be used to rebuild infrastructures damaged by the Israeli Army in Gaza and the West Bank.
