‘Out of the 14,239,140 who exercised their right to vote in the elections, 13,540,860 elected Dr. Bashar Al-Assad,’ al-Sabbagh said.
Bassam al-Sabbagh added that the national opposition candidate Mahmoud Ahmad Merhi obtained 470,267 votes (3.3%), while 213,968 people voted for candidate Abdullah Saloum Abdullah, thus obtaining 1.5%.
Immediately after announcing the presidential election results, hundreds of thousands of citizens and Bashar al-Assad´s supporters overcrowded the streets and squares of major cities and towns to celebrate his electoral win.
Syrian Constitution –passed in 2012- sets the presidential term for seven years and president can be elected only for two consecutive terms.
