Arrests of Mali’s president and prime minister condemned

Bamako, May 25 (Prensa Latina) Several organizations, including the African Union (AU), condemned the arrests by military officers of Mali's transitional President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to Africa News, soldiers dissatisfied with the formation of a new provisional government forcibly transferred these Malian authorities to a military camp in Kati, near Bamako, on Monday evening.

As confusion reigns in Mali, amid a tense calm, without issuing any official statement on the event, Congolese leader Felix Tshisekedi, acting president of the AU, demanded the immediate release of the provisional authorities.

After calling on the political forces involved in the violent incident for moderation, the AU representative also condemned any actions that seek to destabilize Mali.

Other organizations, such as the Economic Community of West African States and the European Union, demanded through statements the immediate return to normality in Bamako.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for calm in Mali and urged the military officers to unconditionally release the detained transitional authorities.
