Latin American girls are victims of cyber bullying

Panama City, May 24 (Prensa Latina) Fifty-eight percent of Latin American girls have been victims of cyber bullying at some time in their lives, according to a study published on Monday by the Plan International organization, whose regional office is in Panama City.

According to the research conducted last year, 59 percent of bullied children and young women assured that the abusive and insulting language is the most common kind of attack, while 50 percent recognized that currently cases of online persecution exceed those registered on the streets.

The girls pointed out that Facebook (39 percent) is the digital platform where most attacks tend to occur, followed by Instagram (23 percent), WhatsApp (14), Snapchat (10), Twitter (nine) and TikTok (six).

Gender violence, whose figures increased drastically during the health emergency generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the lock-downs and social confinements decreed to counteract the progress of the pandemic, was also added to this study.

According to Plan International, this situation forced the victims to live longer with their aggressors, which deteriorated the levels of protection in many cases as a result of the lack of access to complaint mechanisms and the loss of social ties.
