European leaders meet in person to debate global agenda

Brussels, May 24 (Prensa Latina) European Union leaders are meeting in Brussels on Monday to analyze migration issues, the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change, at the first face-to-face summit of the community bloc this year.

Other aspects under discussion are relations with the United Kingdom after the country’s withdrawal from the regional mechanism, the future of relations with Russia and the progress made in the conflict in the Middle East after the end of Israel’s attacks on Palestinian territory.

The community bloc on Friday committed 100 million Covid-19 vaccines to the poorest countries, in an action that was interpreted by analysts as an example of scientific leadership.

However, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatened in late March to stop exports of vaccines if the countries of the regional bloc do not receive the promised doses.

The head of the EU executive insisted that the contract with Europe must be respected before starting to supply vaccines to other countries.

The migratory issue plays a key role at this summit, amid the border conflict between Spain and Morocco after the arrivals in the former thousands of undocumented immigrants from the North African nation.
