Russia’s Ministry of Agriculture forecasts fall in grain production

Moscow, May 22 (Prensa Latina) Russia's Ministry of Agriculture forecasts that the 2021 grain harvest will be 127.4 million tons, lower than last year's 133.5 million tons, local press reported on Saturday.

Of the total grain for this year, the Agriculture portfolio estimated that 80.7 million would be wheat, also down from 85.9 million tons in 2020, according to the Interfax news agency.

It referred that Russian farmers have sown spring grains on 20.2 million hectares, 69 percent of the planned area.

Despite the Covid-19 impact on the global economy, Russian exports of agricultural-industrial products in 2020 showed record figures, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture indicated in March, taking stock of the past year.

The Ministry highlighted that the country had a record harvest of rice, rapeseed and buckwheat and one of the best cereal crops.

Thirty-three percent of overseas shipments were cereals, mostly wheat, of which 49 million tons worth 10 billion dollars were exported, 25 percent more in volume and 29 percent more in monetary terms than in 2019.
