Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Yavad Zarif exposed to the head of the foreign policy of the European Union (EU), Josep Morell, what he described as inhuman those sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump.
The two diplomats discussed the dialogue now underway in Vienna, Austria, between Tehran and the 4+1 group (United Kingdom, France, Russia and China plus Germany) to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or nuclear deal.
The United States abandoned that deal in May 2018 and imposed again punitive anti-Iranian measures left behind under the multilateral treaty sealed in 2015.
The Biden administration is interested in returning to that deal, which is estimated a milestone in the history of international diplomacy but makes it conditional on Iran returning to the obligations of the original agreement.
Tehran cut nuclear commitments in response to the US’s withdrawal from JCPOA and is now refusing to go back to square one, arguing that it is up to Washington to come first.
