US and Canada criticize Mexico in T-MEC for investments

Mexico, May 18 (Prensa Latina) The United States and Canada criticized Mexico on investments in mining and the energy sector, during the first meeting of the tripartite Free Trade Agreement, known as T-MEC, that concludes on Tuesday.

CThe virtual meeting, started on Monday, is chaired by Mexican Secretary of the Economy Tatiana Clouthier, United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai, and Canadian Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade Mary Ng.

Tai and Ng expressed Clouthier in the T-MEC Free Trade Commission the concern by their respective governments about Mexico’s investment in mining and energy, two key sectors for the three countries.

Although only signs are so far appreciated because the meeting is private, anonymous Mexican sources informed that the objective of the United States and Canada is to guarantee the economic security of their companies, and the workers in those industries.

Clouthier and Ng highlighted the growing economic relationship between Canada and Mexico, and their shared interest in inclusive trade that benefits small companies, women, indigenous peoples and underrepresented groups in both countries, but the differences have not been ironed out, according to sources close to the meeting.

The meeting enters its second and last day this Tuesday to continue the debate on the rules of origin of the automotive industry and access to border motor transport services, the progress in the labor reform in Mexico, as well as the idea to strengthen the environmental collaboration.
