Although he does not appear in the list of the 30 best players, the continental organization joined the mourning for the death of the goalkeeper of the Portuguese Oporto club, Alfredo Quintana, who will be honored on June 11 at the gala of the Champions League’s All-Star.
On its website, the EHF highlighted Quintana’s humility on and off the court, as such an outstanding goalkeeper will always be remembered and missed by the international handball community.
When informing the candidates for the individual awards, all 15 head coaches of the competition decided to take advantage of the closing of the Champions League to pay a special tribute to Quintana’s legacy, who was a leader in the national teams of Cuba and Portugal.
The goalkeeper passed away last February 26 at the age of 32 after a five-day struggle for his life in the São João hospital as a result of a cardio-respiratory arrest during training.
