Over seven million Cubans have access to the Internet

Havana, May 17 (Prensa Latina) Over seven million Cubans, 64 percent of the country's population, have access to the Internet by different means, the Ministry of Communications reported on Monday.

The Ministry stated, as part of the celebration of the World Telecommunications Day, that despite the blockade enforced by the United States, Cuba has 6.6 millions mobile telephone users and is expanding the coverage of the fourth-generation network (4G).

The report pointed out that 76 percent of Cubans have digital TV signal coverage and nearly 4.2 millions have access to the Internet via mobile data, including 1.3 million users of 4G.

It also stressed that information has revealed itself as one of the country’s main defensive lines during Covid-19.

‘The pandemic has granted greater relevance to the use of information and communication technologies, which reaffirmed the need to have a telecommunication infrastructure that favors the usage by all under equal conditions, and contributes to responding to the great challenges of the countries in the digital field,’ according to the statement.

The International Telecommunication Union was founded on May 17, 1865, following the signing of the International Telegraphic Agreement in Paris.

In addition, the Day of the Internet, established in 2006, is celebrated worldwide, at the request of the World Summit of the Society of Information to the United Nations General Assembly.
