Most of them lack immigration coverage, but others have it and that allows them to stay in Mexico and even to regularize their situation, the undersecretary of Human Rights, Migration and Population at Mexico’s Interior Secretariat, Alejandro Encinas, pointed out.
Encinas commented that he talked with United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees (ACNUR) Kelly Clements about Mexico’s challenges in this matter, due to its geographical location and the increase in the number of people seeking a refugee status.
Clements explained during the private meeting that she recognized the Mexican Government’s efforts to respond to those applications in the context of the health emergency, and expressed the ACNUR’s commitment to continue collaborating in strengthening asylum capacities.
Although more than 90 percent of asylum-seeking migrants come from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, migrants from 78 nations are currently living in this nation.
