Tshisekedi, who is conducting a visit to Sudan, exposed the proposal after meeting the chief of the Sovereign Transition Council, Abdel Fatah al-Burhan, and the Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, with the initiative being studied by the relevant authorities.
The initiative, whose contents did not make it to the press, is being currently assessed, as per declarations made by the Council, who made reference to a meeting in Khartoum of the President of the African Union with the Minister of Foreign Relations of Sudan, Mariam al-Sadiq.
Local observers considered that the suggestion should be added to the management made by the Union in order to resolve the dispute surrounding the dam, which is expected to have a significant social and impact once it begins functioning.
Khartoum defends Ethiopia’s right to develop its capabilities and make use of the resources of the Blue Nile, in the words of the Foreign Minister, but she said that should not harm the interests of the other two countries who benefit from the river: Egypt and Sudan.
Al-Sadiq also pointed out that the interested parties will not be able to ‘reap mutual benefits’ from the project unless they reach a legal agreement equally binding for all, especially in terms of the filling and operation of the dam.
