Guterres congratulated Xi Jinping as this year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of China and the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the People´s Republic of China´s lawful seat in the UN.
Likewise, Guterres expressed his desire for greater UN-China cooperation for peace and security, sustainable development such as climate change and biological diversity, as well as human rights.
As reported by UNSG’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres expressed his commitment to ensuring the success of the UN Conference on Biodiversity in the Chinese city of Kunming, and also at the climate change conference, known as COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland.
UN chief spoke with the Chinese president about the need to address the climate change crisis, achieve an equitable Covid-19 vaccine distribution and alleviate the debt of low- and middle-income countries in recovering from the pandemic.
