Orlando Verges, director of the ‘Casa del Caribe’ (The Caribbean House), which sponsors the encounter, expressed the support of the international event to the inhabitants and authorities of those islands due to the damages caused by the eruption of La Soufriere volcano and to those of Haiti because of the difficult political situation they are going through.
Likewise, he pronounced himself in relation to the victims of repression and police abuse in peaceful demonstrations in Colombia and to the Mexicans on account of the deaths and injuries caused by the accident on a subway line in the capital city.
Verges noted the intention to advance the actions of this festivity during this month and upcoming June with the main activities in the usual dates of July 3 to 9 with the pertinent adaptations derived from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Among the preparations that are being made, the intellectual alluded to the decision to award the Casa del Caribe International Prize, for which a relevant Cuban historian and anthropologist and a folklorist from the Brazilian region of Pernambuco are expected to participate.
On Friday, they also included the evocation of recently deceased people closely linked to the institution and the Festival, such as playwright Alcides Carlos, dancer and choreographer Ernesto Armiñan and Jose Manuel Perez, president of the Yoruba Cultural Association of Cuba.
