Since 2017, the figure has been rising up to more than a third of its population that is experiencing a critical shortage of food, high levels of under-nutrition and speedy depletion of livelihood assets. Lemarquis also stated that Haiti´s increase in last four years is because of episodes of drought, economic shocks, socio-political unrest, insecurity and structural vulnerability, among others.
According to the Global Report on Food Crises, 155 million people are in an emergency situation or even worse, the majority in Africa and the Middle East.
Haiti is rated 10 with about 4.1 million people, 1.2 million of them under emergency phase, but it is expected that by June the number to exceed 4.3 million.
