The dam will help generate hydroelectric energy, irrigate crops and supply drinking water to neighboring communities, which could boost agriculture and their local economy, the president noted.

‘The construction of the Marion Dam conveys immense hope for the future of the North-East department, where the per capita income is the country’s lowest due, in particular, to lack of water resources,’ the Head of State said during the ceremony.

Besides its storage capacity, some 20 million cubic meters of water will be able to pass through the dam, and the projects allows for the development of fish farming.

The initiative was undertaken by a group of Cuban technicians from the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources and Cuban enterprise Dinvai.

Moïse thanked the collaboration both of Cuba and Haitian technical teams that devoted themselves ‘with a creative spirit to the construction of the Marion dam.’

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the surface irrigated with water from the Marion River will go from 1,800 to 3,000 hectares, and the goal is to reach 10,000 hectares.
