EU resumes citrus imports from Argentina

Buenos Aires, Apr 28 (Prensa Latina) Argentina's government announced that the European Union (EU) will reopen its market to its citrus fruits in 2021.

According to Argentina´s Foreign Ministry, the EU confirmed its reopening of citrus market starting May 1, after imports were called off on August 14, 2020, due to unusual presence of Phyllosticta citricarpa (known as black spot) in Argentine shipments. This ‘reflects the work conducted by the Foreign Ministry together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, so that relevant product from the country’s regional economies can recover a valuable market,’ said the source.

Likewise, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship said measures were taken to strengthen the health system requested by the European Union including registration of production plots and units where citrus fruits are produced and the assignment of unique traceability codes in these plots and production units.

Argentina is EU´s leading lemon supplier and fourth-largest orange supplier. In its 27 country members, the European Union is the first recipient of citrus exports from the northwestern and northeastern regions of Argentina.
