Diaz and high-ranking prominent figures from the country laid wreaths at the Memorial Complex to the Heroes of Chernobyl, located in Desnianskyi district, where more than 17,000 people were evacuated at that time from the sites affected by the disaster.
His Holiness Filaret, Patriarch of Kiev and All Russia-Ukraine, made a requiem prayer near the Virgin of Chernobyl monument to the victims of the April 26, 1986, accident.
During the rally, his Holiness expressed gratitude to the Cuban ambassador and people for the help provided to Ukraine for so many years in treating children affected by the nuclear catastrophe.
As part of the commemorative day, Ukrainia’s NTN channel broadcast the documentary ‘Sasha, a child from Chernobyl’, by Cuban filmmakers Maribel Acosta and Roberto Chile, and produced by Argentina’s press medium Resumen Latinoamericano.
The documentary shows the results of the project, especially the second chance at life that Cuba gave to children such as Olexandr Savchenko, ‘Sacha’, the protagonist of the story.
Sasha currently works as a stomatologist in Cuba, a country he considers his second homeland.
