This mass virtual assistance, 600 of which do it in person in the Mexican resort, is an indication of the great expectation that dominates tourism, undoubtedly the most affected sector by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Mexican Secretariat of Tourism stated.
Although hybrid, this is the first mass face-to-face meeting after more than a year of the Covid-19 pandemic, said WTTC Chairman Christopher Nassetta, who announced the investment program which should generate more than 100,000 jobs across Mexico.
Nassetta stated that at this time, the tourist industry needs to recover by opening international borders, and recalled the fall of almost 50 percent registered in 2020 when it went from 9.2 trillion dollars in 2019 to 4.7 trillion before the year’s end.
According to estimates by the Council, mobility and international travel may resume in June, and if contribution to world GDP materializes, they could increase this year up to 48.5 percent and reach levels similar to the time immediately prior to Covid-19 in 2022 for an annualized 25.3-percent increase.
Mexican Tourism Secretary Miguel Torruco called at the opening ceremony to arrange international and regional alliances to keep the sector afloat.
