Flores expressed his pride and motivation for PAHO’s effort, which will assume, along with the Health Ministry, its implementation in four years, after the donation of 22 million euros.

The initiative, she said, is part of the Alejandro Giammattei administration’s Great National Crusade for Nutrition, one of his electoral campaign promises, as announced on January 14, 2021, when he took over the presidency of the country.

Primary health care and nutrition issues, focused on nutrition especially, is one of Giammattei’s most important axes. With no primary health care, everything is impossible; it has been proved during the pandemic, Flores said.

The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Primary Health Care Edwin Montúfar, EU Ambassador Thomas Peyker, and PAHO/WHO Representative in Guatemala Oscar Barreneche.

In his speech, Peyker stressed the significance of investing properly in a strengthened and resilient healthcare system in Guatemala to eradicate child malnutrition, while Barreneche stressed the importance of equitable access to services for all.
